Lesson Structure
Each instructional session consists of approximately 12-15 minutes of focused teaching followed by 20-25 minutes of hands-on practice and application.
This approach achieves optimal results when implemented as one comprehensive lesson per week. This schedule allows students to apply newly acquired grammar concepts throughout their daily writing across all academic subjects. Students encounter numerous opportunities to reinforce grammar principles in their essays, reports, creative writing, and even note-taking, rather than limiting practice to isolated grammar exercises. Mastery of each concept must be demonstrated before advancing to new material. Every resource includes supplementary activities and alternative teaching strategies for students requiring additional reinforcement.
Our Philosophy
Effective writing represents the sophisticated process of transforming thoughts and ideas from the mind onto paper in a manner that allows seamless comprehension and recreation in another person’s understanding.
Language serves as our primary toolkit for this complex communication process, while grammar functions as the comprehensive instruction manual that ensures universal understanding of each linguistic component. Just as improperly handled tools can damage a craftsman’s work, incorrectly applied words can distort or destroy the intended message.
Teaching Methodology
Grammarsearch Grammar instruction emphasizes proper word usage through constructing sentences that follow established, proven patterns. Each sentence type follows distinct structural patterns, and students develop proficiency by practicing within these systematic frameworks.
Our program leverages color associations already established in students’ long-term memory systems. Every part of speech receives identification through its specific function within sentences and corresponds to a designated color. Rather than requiring rote memorization of word lists, our system categorizes all vocabulary based on grammatical roles and sentence functions.
Skill Development
Mastering sentence pattern recognition enables students to determine unfamiliar words’ grammatical roles through logical deduction. This categorization and deductive reasoning process develops critical higher-order thinking abilities while strengthening overall cognitive development.
This integrated approach to grammar and writing instruction helps students develop increasingly sophisticated thinking structures. Enhanced structural thinking improves creative language application and deepens reading comprehension across all academic areas.
Research-Based Foundation
Modern educational neuroscience has revealed significant insights about optimal learning conditions over the past several decades. Gail Becker incorporated these evidence-based findings throughout the development of Grammarsearch’s instructional methodology.
Cognitive Connection Theory: Research demonstrates that students retain new information more effectively when their brains create multiple connections between novel concepts and previously mastered knowledge. Our program integrates strategic color associations to strengthen concept retention and recall.
Active Engagement Principle: Maintaining consistent student participation proves essential for knowledge retention. Our instructional design requires student responses approximately every two to three minutes, ensuring sustained focus and continuous learning engagement.
Higher-Order Thinking Integration: Educational research identifies four critical higher-order thinking skills essential for academic success. Our comprehensive program systematically engages students in practicing all four cognitive skill areas throughout instruction.
Natural Language Development: Our curriculum introduces parts of speech following the same developmental sequence that children naturally acquire language skills. This progression aligns with the brain’s inherent language learning patterns, maximizing comprehension and retention.
